Because of a devastating collision meteoric their home planet was destroyed vegetation, and only himself, Goku, and two other Saiyans survive. Everyone is stunned.

Raditz tells Goku that he participated in the earth as a small child to wipe their population, but because of a nasty tumble when he was still young, Goku forget that mission and was adopted by the older son Gohan to the fine man he is today. Raditz demands that Goku with him in the plunder of our planet, and proceeds to Gohan as a hostage when Goku refuses to cooperate.
